Abstract

This paper presents an improved fingerprint verification system (FVS). It is essential to improve the quality of the input images and to reduce the minutiae matching time to ensure the performance of the FVS. The improved fingerprint image enhancement algorithm is based on the closing method and the information of local ridge orientation. We report that the proposed algorithm has shown a fairly good performance in simulations. We also propose a fast and reliable minutiae matching algorithm, which is capable of finding the correspondences between minutiae in the input image and the stored template by just using the minutiae in core region and avoiding an exhaustive search. To evaluate the performance of the proposed matching and image enhancement algorithms, we implemented the FVS using an ADSP21060 processor.
