Abstract

Acidic pretreatment is one of the most mature technologies among various pretreatment methodologies for the utilization of lignocellulosic feedstocks. Because of the low cost and effectiveness of acid catalysts, several types of acids including concentrated mineral acid, dilute mineral acid and dicarboxylic acid have been used in acidic pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. However, some disadvantages when using acid catalysts, such as corrosiveness and inhibitor formation, lower the immediate commercialization of the cellulosic ethanol production process using acidic pretreatment. This chapter aims to introduce the history of acidic pretreatment and to review the current status of the acidic pretreatment focused as a component of cellulosic ethanol processes. Also, the futuristic process configurations of acidic pretreatment for the successful commercialization of the cellulosic ethanol production are suggested.
