Buffeting noise of automobile at running speeds

Abstract

In this paper, automobile buffeting noise is investigated by an LES-based CAA method. A simplified model car, employed for a wind tunnel experiment at the Hyundai Motor's company is considered. The sunroof and rear-window buffeting noises are examined by solving the three-dimensional, filtered, compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a sixth-order compact scheme and a four-stage Runge-Kutta method. It was found that the passenger room acts as a Helmholtz resonator for sunroof and rear-window buffeting noises with two different effective length scales: a vertical size of recirculating flow over the sunroof and a diameter of the conical vortex generated from the A-pillar, respectively.
