Along with industrial and economic development, intensive mining activities have been causing detrimental environmental degradation, including elevated concentrations of toxic elements, a decrease in soil fertility and microbial activity, and generation of acid mine drainage (AMD) (Rodríguez-Vila et al. 2015, Yang et al. 2013).
