We have studied the loading characteristics of optical dipole traps, and we have made a comparative study of the relative loading efficiency of pulsed vs. continuous-wave operation of the trap. The trap is produced by using a Nd:YAG laser that can operate in either a continuous-wave (cw) or a mode-locked, pulsed mode. In particular, we have studied how the transfer of ultracold rubidium atoms from a magneto-optical trap (MOT) to the dipole trap depends on the loading time, the MOT laser detuning, and the hyperfine repumper intensity. We find that while the loading and the confinement times for the two types of traps are nearly the same, the loading dependence on the MOT detuning is very different for cw and pulsed traps.
