Eye-contact 3D visual communication through integral imaging-based display system

Abstract

An interaction system based on integral imaging is presented. Two users are respectively in front of a 3D display system and communicate together. A half mirror enables to record the viewer's face with a camera while the 3D content is displayed. The 3D data recorded by the camera are then sent to the display system of the other user. In this way users can see each other in 3D and real eye-contact can be assured. When the lens array and display panel are aligned properly, the viewer can perceive 3D image in the viewing window defined by the configuration of the system. Simulations were also performed in order to generate integral image from virtual 3D model and to reconstruct them at different distance. We expect this system to bring a contribution in the development of future interactive 3D systems.
