In-situ observation of thermal expansion of CaO-A12O3-SiO2 melts

Abstract

CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 slag is one of the most important silicate melts in iron- and steel-making processes, and thermophysical properties of the slag is essential to optimize the iron- and steel-making processes. Owing to the amphoteric nature of Al2O3, it is known that many thermophysical properties such as viscosity and thermal conductivity depend on the structure evolution with increasing Al2O3 concentration. In this study, the effect of Al2O3 concentration on the thermal expansion coefficient of the CaO-Al2O3- SiO2 slag was investigated. The experiment was carried out by using the aerodynamic levitation technique. In order to examine the effect of slag structure on the thermal expansion behavior, structure analysis was carried out separately with Raman spectroscopy. An empirical equation to describe the molar volume of the slag was suggested with respect to temperature and composition, and the relationship between the thermal expansion coefficient and the structure evolution was discussed.
