Abstract

An integrated intelligent system is being developed for cell culture process control. It consists of several symbolic reasoning systems and numerical computation packages. These software programs are written in different languages and can be used independently. They are under the control of a supervisory expert system, namely, the metasystem. The key issue in constructing the integrated intelligent system is to organize the metasystem. The metasystem manages the selection, operation and communication of these programs. The new intelligent system can diagnose measurement and actuator failures and abnormal process conditions, and it can select and activate the most suitable control technique for the particular process conditions. It can also serve as a universal configuration for developing high-performance intelligent systems for many complicated engineering applications.
