Layout design of variable size manufacturing cells using simulated annealing algorithm

Abstract

The Facility layout design problem has employed Euclidean or rectilinear distance measure. However, in manufacturing systems that are characterized by material moves through pre-specified aisles or routes and workcells with I/O ports, an accurate distance measure must be a flow distance with consideration of the possible orientations of workcell. Moreover, the shape for a workcell is usually different from the others. In this paper, a mathematical model to minimize the total flow distance between I/O ports of variable shaped workcells is developed. The simulated annealing-based heuristic algorithm is presented. The computational experiments to find appropriate parameter values and to compare the performance of the proposed algorithm are executed and the results are analyzed.
