Abstract
Butanol can be produced by fermentation using solventogenic clostridia. However, economical production of butanol is hampered due to low fermentation efficiency and high substrate costs. To overcome these problems, genetic manipulations have been widely applied to solventogenic clostridia on the basis of systems metabolic engineering. This review mainly discusses the recent advances in strain development and improvements in fermentation performance.
