Abstract
Scroll compressors have been used for various types of systems due to its advantages such as small size, simple structure, and high reliability. However, the refrigerant leakage in the scroll leads to a negative effect on the overall performance of a scroll compressor. In this study, a numerical simulation on a variable speed scroll compressor is carried out. The model contains heat/mass transfer and geometrical analysis for the characteristics of the refrigerant leakage. The model is validated by comparing the results with the experimental data for an R-410A heat pump. The mass flow rate and compressor power obtained from the simulation are within ± 6% and ± 4%, respectively, of the experimental data. The characteristics of the refrigerant leakage were analyzed theoretically and the variation of volumetric efficiency was also discussed in various operating conditions.
