Abstract

Energy is an indispensable factor to civilization. Therefore, securing an energy source that is eco-friendly, sustainable, and cost-effective is foundation to the world’s economic prosperity and an opportunity to decarbonize our energy sources. Thus, the fourth or the latest generation of biofuels puts an emphasis on “carbon capturing” and the usage of biomass, highlighting the importance of microalgae. Microalgae have a promising ability to biologically capture and convert CO2 into valuable products through the usage of photosynthetic machineries, leading to the development of the biodiesel conversion technologies. The principal steps required for microalgal biofuel in upstream and downstream of production will be discussed in this chapter.
