Abstract

Sulfonated PEEK(SPEEK) was obtained by sulfonation of PEEK using 95% sulfuric acid. The blends of SPEEK with poly(ether imide) (PEI) and with polycarbonate (PC) were prepared by solution casting. Glass transiton temperatures (Tgs) were measured by differential scanning calorimeter for the SPEEK-PEI blends and SPEEK-PC blends. Single Tg was observed in SPEEK-PEI blends which indicates the miscibility between the SPEEK and PEI phases. Double TgS were observed in the blends of SPEEK-PC which indicate phase separation between the SPEEK and PC phases. Polymer-polymer interaction parameters (Χ12) for the SPEEK-PEI blends and SPEEK-PC blends were calculated using the thermal analysis results. Phase behavior of the SPEEK-PEI-PC ternary blends was studied using the Χ12 values which were obtained from the binary blends of SPEEK-PEI, SPEEK-PC, and PEI-PC. From this result, single phase was calculated in the region of SPEEK-PEI blends and phase separation was calculated in the most of the other region. Tg results obtained from the DSC measurements of SPEEK-PEI-PC ternary blends were found to be consistent with the phase behavior of the SPEEK-PEI-PC ternary blends.
