Abstract
We study the vacuum structure of the 2+1-dimensional generalized Gross-Neveu model characterized by a couple of coupling constants g1 and g2. Using the Fierz rearrangements for various types of four-fermion terms and also introducing auxiliary fields, we show that the generalized parity, which combines the parity with the Z 2 action on an even number of fermions, becomes broken when g1 and g2 satisfy certain criteria. We also comment on the Thirring model which arises in our model as a special case with g1 = g2. A detailed analysis for parity-breaking solutions of the Thirring model is given for the N = 2 case.
