Structural study of nitrogen-doping effects in bamboo-shaped multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Abstract

The structure and crystallinity of bamboo-shaped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (BS-MWNT) dependent on the nitrogen doping levels were studied using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The BS-MWNTs were grown on the iron catalyst deposited silica substrates at 850°C by thermal chemical vapor deposition. A iron catalytic film was deposited on silica substrates by rf sputtering and was pretreated for 20 minutes at 850°C by a NH3 gas with a flow rate of 1000 sccm. The results show that the N-sp3 C bonds are more abundant than the N-sp2 C bonds above 5% nitrogen concentration.
